Value in Blended Nursing

Facing a shortage of nurses during the pandemic, the leadership team at Allegheny Health knew they needed to take a bold and strategic approach to ensure high quality patient care. Claire Zangerle, Chief Nurse Executive at Alleghany Health, describes the value of blended, team-based nursing at Alleghany Health Network. The team nursing concept brings together a registered nurse, a licensed practical nurse, and a patient care technician to collaboratively care for patients as a team. Here, Claire describes how strategically utilizing all scopes of practice is an important way to ensure quality, safety and value, and that blending skill sets creates better outcomes for patients.
