Nurses play a central role in creating revolutionary and lasting changes within healthcare and patient care. What are some of the advances they’ve made? During the past year, the Johnson & Johnson Campaign for Nursing’s Future and Nurse.com partnered to develop a content series called “APNs Transforming Care” that highlights the ways in which advanced practice nurses (APNs) are changing the face of healthcare delivery.

Here are a few of their stories:

“In primary care we now have a much greater emphasis on population health, caring for a group of patients outside of the traditional office visit. This shift requires a different nursing skill set and a new set of proficiencies, especially given the fact that patients are currently being discharged earlier and are much sicker. The telephone is our stethoscope, and keeping patients healthy and safe at home is our ultimate goal.”

Headshot of Dr. S.L. Baker

“Don’t let fear paralyze you. Keep going and push through even though you may have financial or other burdens. You are smart enough and you are not too old. Yes, it’s harder than earning the BSN degree, but it is achievable. Try to cut back on work while you are in school. Many will try to discourage you; ignore them. It will be the best decision you have ever made.”

Transforming Family Practice - Scharmaine Lawson-Baker, DNP, FNP-BC, RN, FAAN

Headshot of Ali Baghai

“My work involves many technical aspects, including intubating; inserting central lines; and administering epidurals, spinals and peripheral nerve blocks Once surgery is complete, the anesthetist must wake the patient at the right time. My role is similar to flying a plane. It’s all about takeoffs and landings, doing it smoothly and properly to keep our patients safe.”

Stay tuned! The fourth and final article in the “APNs Transforming Care” series will feature Jennifer Viner, MS, CNRN, NP and will profile her role as a nurse practitioner working with patients and families in the U.S. and around the world , and will be published on October 27, 2016 on www.Nurse.com

  • Building well-being and leadership skills in nursing isn’t a new concept, but surprisingly, it hasn’t traditionally been a formal component of nursing education. As a result, many nurses enter the profession unprepared for what’s ahead. Beginning this winter, a new educational curriculum from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing will pilot a competency-based approach to developing the next generation of nurses at 10 nursing colleges nationwide, focused on empowering students with the skills needed to prioritize self-care, healthy behaviors and well-being in the healthcare work environment.
